Antioch, Ca. - Suburban Town with a Marina by the Bay
   by Howard Giske

Antioch, California, is located at the junction of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, in Contra Costa County. It has a population of 105,000 in just 28 square miles. Antioch is on the Sacramento River delta, and near such attractions as the Napa Valley Wineries, the Monterey Peninsula, and the Northern California coast. The bedroom community is ideal for commuting to work to Oakland and San Francisco. Others commute as far as Sacramento, which has made Antioch homes an attractive buy in the region. There are also plenty of leisure activities, like fishing on the San Joaquin River shoreline. The Sacramento-San Joaquin River delta has a network of natural and man-made channels, creating a system of isolated lowland islands and wetlands with dikes or levees to control the water flow. The extensive system of earthen levees has allowed farming throughout the delta, one of the most fertile areas in California

Another attraction is Antioch Marina which is in within walking distance of downtown Antioch. There are also restaurants at the Marina. You can get there by Amtrak as well by boat. The development of the Antioch Marina was completed in 1988, and it is run by the city. The berths are on the east side of the Marina, and the size of the Marina basin confined within the sea walls approximately 800 feet by 750 feet. It is located on the south side of the San Joaquin River, east of the San Francisco Bay. The 310-berth public Marina is one of the newest in San Francisco Bay area, and is an attractive, multi-use facility that is home port for recreational water crafts of all sorts

The city of Antioch has reconstructed the Historic El Campanil Theatre which was first opened in 1928. It now presents a wide variety of entertainment opportunities including films, theatre, concerts and is host to numerous local dance and community based organizations. This theatre was restored to its original grandeur by a non-profit organization in 2004. The Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch organizes education in graphic arts, sculpture, pottery, and performance arts for all age groups. It also hosts the Saturday Summer Concert Series as well as other community events. Nearby, the Lynn House Gallery houses exhibits throughout the year. Their exhibits present a wide spectrum of themes, media and styles. Rivertown Art Center is housed in a historic bank building built in 1923. It is administered by the Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch and was created to allow local artists additional opportunities to exhibit their art. The Art Center is dedicated to fostering the arts and providing cultural opportunities. Riverview Union High School was the first high school constructed in Contra Costa. This historic building became the home of the Antioch Historical Society Museum following its purchase in 1999. It houses historical exhibits and offers tours of the grounds.

Antioch is served by the Tri-Delta Transit Bus System and the BART train system (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Antioch is also near Metropolitan Oakland International Airport, Sacramento International Airport and San Francisco International Airport.
